Major Fashion Week events often redefine new trends for spring/summer collections that we anticipate seeing in the new year. New York, London, Milan, and Paris take centre stage in the world of fashion and give us a glimpse of what to expect.
In the world of luxury bags, we're seeing a turn. Think; trending designer tote bags re-imagined, true metallics, oversized top handles and delicate romantics.
2023 Trending Designer Bags
Redefined Totes
Gone are the days of generic tote bags now that luxury is town. We’re so used to seeing minimalistic totes that blend in as not to take away from a glam fit, and although they’re perfect for mixing and matching, major fashion houses have added a chic touch to completely elevate what we’ve always known. Christian Dior has taken the classic shape and boasted structure, adding moments of drama yet simplicity in their Book Tote that pays homage to Saint Tropez through a gorgeous motif.
Oversized Convenience
Okay, so the miniatures had their moment. But let’s be real, they weren’t the most convenient bag and, essentially, nothing more of an accessory for shock factor (though some may disagree). In 2023, we’re expecting to see bags on the complete opposite end of the scale. Oversized. For example, the Proenza Schouler drawstring tote and Luars new large Ana bag.
Much like the redefined era of tote bags, what we knew about the micro-handbags is simply being inflated; providing us with nothing short of convenience and style bundled in absolute luxury. A notable feature of these large trending designer bags is the calibre of space available. Whether you’re wanting to treat yourself to a new work bag (just do it), a baby bag, or something to use day in and day out, it’s the fact you’ll never find something more feasible for regular use than what you will in 2023.
Saint Laurent’s iCare maxi shopper tote was only unveiled in April, but has already risen to cult status thanks so the coolest tastemakers. Seen on Zoë Kravitz, Sydney Sweeney, Hailey Bieber, Morgan Stewart McGraw, it has become the verifiable IT bag of Summer and we are crushing hard for its emblazoned with the iconic jewel YSL signature.
Heart on Your Bag
From Vivienne Westwood to Alaïa, a common theme during spring/summer fashion week were delicate heart shaped bags. Seen in both eccentric street styled outfits to chic and Classique ensembles, they’re the perfect proclaimed accessory for day-to-night. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, these beautiful little bags have hit the scene full force. During fashion week, we saw major fashion houses such as Balmain, Louis Vuitton, Leowe, Chanel and Moschino pronouncing these armed accessories in unique ways. The best part? Whether it’s a trend for the new season or not, heart shaped bags are a statement that can never really go out of style.
When it comes to Gucci, Chanel and Louis Vuitton, some of their most popular bags to date are the heart shapes – sporting both classic monogram designs for Gucci and LV, and Chanel’s typical quilted finish. What we saw this year, however, were rich ruby reds to contrast little black dresses and edgy street style outfits – perfect for drawing the eye to your accessory. As Yves Saint Laurent once said, “what is important in a dress is the woman who is wearing it", which we believe to be true when one is adorned in a gorgeous statement bag.
Upscaled Metallics
One of the best parts about fashion week every year is putting together outfits that we’ve never seen before. Something that will make people stop and stare, cameras snap, and articles capture. Nothing screams ‘fashion’ like a statement luxury handbag, and it’s all about how you dress the bag with your outfit. From minimalism with chrome finishes, to maximalist outfits with contrasting absolute metallics, these bags pave the way for unique and defined looks.
Boasting influences from Y2K, which we can’t seem to get enough of, metallic designer bags are nothing but the best way to jazz up your wardrobe. For a smart investment, consider the high shine trend that is Fendi from this year’s fashion week (um, the Fendigraphy collection is literally to die for), and the bold embellishments across their upcoming range.
Bags Need Their Own Bag
So, we’ve determined that space and convenience is the most sought after fundamental of a handbag, especially that of a luxury bag – but what spells space and convenience more than a double bag? In 2023 we’ll be seeing the likes of Salvatore Ferragamo, Off-White and Fendi sporting bags that need their own bags, as per the resort 2023 collection – showcasing the much-loved baguette with alternate designs of itself in pairs.
Practical yet completely chic, it’s the perfect combo for those who enjoyed the micro luxury bag era. Get your fix of the tiny accessory accompanied by something that gets you through running errands; after all, two is better than one when talking about a statement bag.
